About the Teacher

I have been an educator for 32 years. I have taught 1st grade, 3rd grade, and college level teacher preparation classes. I have also been a school library/media specialist. I am from the state of Georgia. I moved to Mississippi in the summer of 2018. I am blessed to be able to teach in the Department of English Learners for DeSoto County Schools. I have a husband who is a cattle rancher, two adult children, and lots of rescued pets.

Learning Time April 6-10

Monday

Listening Which One is the Odd One Out Game? This is a game that develops listening for a particular piece of information.

Say a string or list of words to your child that are part of a particular theme or category. Insert one word into the set that does not belong and ask your child to identify the word that doesn’t belong.

Example:

apple, banana, leopard, pear and apricot.

The word leopard is an animal but the rest of the words are types of fruits.

Start off with an easy example like this and later make the categories less obvious or make the odd word of a slightly different category.

For example, say a list of vegetables and insert one fruit, or say a list of negative emotions and add in a positive emotion.

Tuesday

Speaking: Have a conversation with a family member about which day of the week is your favorite? Why is that day your favorite? Remember to speak in full sentences and give plenty of details.

Wednesday

Reading: Read a book of your choice to a family member. After reading, discuss all of the characters in the story. How were the characters alike? How were the characters different?

Thursday

Writing: Write a letter to Ms. Kay. Tell me what you have been doing and what you have learned the past two weeks. You can take a picture of your letter and email it to me using the contact link beside my picture on my webpage OR you can make a flipgrid in my “show your work” grid at https://flipgrid.com/swanson2524and read your letter to me.
