End of School Year Message

School Year 2020 has come to an end, but your learning continues. As a whole group, you all have shown me what wonderful souls you all are, as well as what fabulous parents and family you have supporting you. Boys and girls, during these challenging times, I want you to focus on the positives of the situation, and learn from the negatives of each situation. Only then can we appreciate our blessings, and there's many!Remember to be kind to each other, to always have a craving for learning, and to welcome the challenges of tomorrow knowing that in all things there is good and bad, but you are beautifully made to welcome them all!

To my fifth graders moving to the middle school, and who I can now call 6yh graders, congratulations! Always show your "Tiger Pride!" My 3rd graders, who I now consider to be my 4th graders, I'll be waiting for you at OGCE! My new 5th graders, I already know of your fabulousness, so I expect only good, fun learning! Remember, in ALL you do take pride in who you are, and ALWAYS BE KIND to one another. Never forget: "In Lak'ech Ala K'in ~ I am you and you are me!"

With love of a teacher

Nunca olvides: "In Lak'ech Ala K'in ~ ¡Soy tú y tú eres yo!"

Con Amor de maestra

Good Day Boys and Girls! I am missing your smiling faces like I'd never imagine! This pandemic is hard for ALL of us, and the learnings look different for you, but what is important at this time is that you keep practicing your skills of Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking in English whenever possible. You can watch on PBS kids everyday and learn so much in a fun way. You can also help translate many things for your parents and that will keep your brain involved and on the right path to learning. I can't wait to see ya'll in our next school year or hopefully sooner, but for now, KEEP LEARNING!

"During these challenging time we here at Oak Grove Central Elementary and Hernando Hills Elementary are currently working on ways to ensure all of our students have access to an education. Please continue to monitor teacher websites for additional information. We will also be utilizing School Status to send out messages of updates as we have them."

About the Teacher/Welcome Msg

I was born and raised in the beautiful country of Belize, and continued on my life's journey by immigrating with my three sons to my adopted home in Mississippi, USA since 1999. In search of giving back to my new home, I decided to switch careers from being a businesswoman to becoming a life long learner and teach. I attended Northwest Community College in my home town of Senatobia, while working as a paraprofessional at Senatobia Elementary School for nine years. During that time, I went on to complete my studies at the University of Mississippi earning a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education, followed by a Masters Degree in Modern Languages with emphasis in (TESOL) Teaching English to Students of Other Languages as well as a secondary license in English 7-12. I became a member of the Desoto County Schools in November of 2015, and am privileged to serve as an EL Specialist. I am currently serving two schools, Hernando Hills Elementary 's 3rd graders, and Oak Grove Central Elementary's 4th -5th grade ELs. My job is a rewarding one filled with diversity. I love my students, their families, their stories, as well as my co-workers. Together, I feel like we make a difference in this world. My philosophy embraces the Mayan Philosophy which is, " In Lak'ech Ala K'in" translated in English it simply means, " I am you~You are me!" When I look into your eyes I see me, so I treat you like I do myself. It goes hand in hand with what my upbringing taught and practiced...It takes a Village to Raise a Child. Thanks for letting me introduce myself.

Websites for Distance Learning

IXL.COM - Boys and girls, we have been using this website since August. Please continue! I am monitoring and will be rewarding my students in a big way. I'd like for you to do all practices beginning  with Writing Strategies O 1-4 and onward.

NewsELA is another great website for reading passages. You can create an account as a student if you don't have one.

Wordscapes- Parents, wordscapes is a free app that you can download on a phone, iPad, or Laptop. I know that my students may become overloaded with some of the websites because many are using them, so a break is good. Wordscapes is a fun way to build vocabulary. it is relaxing, and will build their knowledge of words and their meanings.
