About the Teacher:

MRS. TRACY SMITH

English Language Learners

Chickasaw Elementary School

Education:  I graduated from the University of Memphis with a Master of Arts degree in Teaching.  My major was Curriculum and Instruction.  I am certified to teach Elementary Education in grades K-8 and have an endorsement as an Early Grade Specialist.  In addition, I am certified to teach English as a Second Language in grades K-12.

Experience:  I have over 25 years of experience in teaching children in grades K-3, including schools in Desoto County, Shelby County, and Memphis area private schools.  I love working with children and truly feel that I was "called" to teach.  Thank you so much for sharing your child with me each day and for allowing me to partner with you to help your child reach their full potential.

Bio:  My husband, Mark, and I have been married for over 28 years and have two children, Chandler and Hunter.  We live in Collierville and are members of Orchard Fellowship Church.  When I am not at school, you will probably find me on the lake with my family or down in Oxford, cheering on my favorite team, the Ole Miss Rebels.

Welcome to our EL Program!

Welcome to the Chickasaw Elementary EL page!  Our ELL (English Language Learner) program is geared to support English Language learners in both social and academic settings.  The areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking are supported through various engaging activities to build second language acquisition and to strengthen connections to the classroom content being taught.  In our ELL program, fun and learning go hand in hand!
Schoology
I will uploading lessons, assignments, and activities in Schoology this year for both our VIP students and our students receiving in school instruction!   Your child will go to www.desotoms.schoology.com and log in using their school email and password.  Parents, you also will have access!  Go to bit.ly/desotoel to learn more about  Schoology to get access to view your child's learning.

What is EL?

EL Means English Learner.  When a student speaks a language other than English, or comes from a family that has another language spoken in their home, we give them a quick test.  If the test shows that the student needs help in speaking, listening, reading, or writing in English, an EL teacher will provide that extra instruction and support to teach those English language skills!

Translation Services

Did you know that we have a district translator for Spanish speaking parents?  If you need help understanding something or a translator to help you communicate with your child's teacher, please contact Liliana Rangel at (662) 449-7189. The Google Translate app is also very useful for translating speech or scanning documents like homework!

Don't forget that you can translate this page and any other Desoto County Schools website page into most languages by using the Select Language dropdown button at the top left of the page.
